When searching for your website or blog chances are you’ll see Easy Counter listing your site details. They data-mine the web from behind various Amazon AWS IP ranges. It’s advisable to report your sites easy counter listing to search engines as web spam (spamdexing), which is what they are! 😡

Easy Counter Spamdexing

Tutorial how to block easy counter from domain scraping and spamdexing your domain details while stealing your servers resources

In the above screenshot of my domain’s easy counter listing, clicking the visit link would normally open my blog in their inline frame (iFrame) if it were not blocked. Chances are easy counter will outrank our own domain in search. They proudly display your sites self determined rank by scraping your domains pages. They display your domain public who-is info, which is another good reason for domain privacy protection! 😉

Their crawling is not identifiable by user-agent (bot) making robots.txt exclusion impossible. In this case htaccess deny rules are the site owners / webmasters best friend.

Here’s how to protect your site from easy counter website spamdexing and resource theft by data mining your site. The below rules must be applied to your .htaccess file. Regardless whether your comfortable editing htaccess file or not, make a backup. If an error is made in while editing your site will crash. So keep a backup in a safe place!

For starters my number one best security advanced rule is preventing my content loading on another domain. This is the X-Frame-Options referred to as Clickjacking. Copy this snippet and paste it into your htaccess 1st line.

Header set X-Frame-Options: SAMEORIGIN
Header set Referrer-Policy: strict-origin
Header set X-XSS-Protection: “1; mode=block”
Header set X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff

Next we want to deny access to easy counter by blocking it as a referrer in htaccess. Any domain in this list will be served a 403 permission denied error when accessing your blog. Add any other known pests to this list. Be sure the last line does not include [NC,OR]. If your server supports Symlink protection un-comment the second line.

RewriteEngine on
#Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} site\.ru [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} jraces\.com [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} imgcop\.com [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} rfig\.net [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} archive\.is [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} easycounter\.com [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} easycounter\.net
RewriteRule .* – [F]

Be sure to add these two snippets to any subdomains you have to protect them from easy counter spam as well. There’s too much spamdexing on the web, this one needs to go!

If many webmasters and site owners report easycounter as spam they hopefully will be dropped from Google and Bing indexes (de-indexed.) If your seo is lacking they will most likely outrank your domain by stealing your content, and submitting to search!
